BALTIMORE, MD ( Oct. 21, 2011) - Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler announced today that Maryland, as part of a $14 million global agreement, reached a settlement with pharmaceutical manufacturer Pfizer, Inc., of New York. The settlement concludes a government investigation into allegations that the company engaged in illegal off-label marketing schemes to promote the sales of its urology drug Detrol for uses that were not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”). The settlement will return $12,724.82 to the State's Medicaid program.
“Illegally promoting the unapproved use of prescription drugs can put an already compromised patient in danger of serious health consequences,” said Attorney General Gansler.

Employability and Job Training
Eliminating barriers to success for young adults and families through community development, workforce preparation, and life skills training
What we believe:
For people encountering barriers to success in their communities, we believe...
- Transformations happen when individuals, families and communities possess the skills, support and opportunity to become their own agents of change.
- The greatest asset of any economically and socially distressed community lies in the untapped potential of its people.
- Tapping that potential requires higher rates of adult participation in the workforce.
- Hands-on learning and community revitalization projects that provide employability training and job skills development are the best means to prepare adults for the workforce, while also fostering community pride and stewardship among residents.
Living Classrooms’ job skills training and workforce development programs assist disadvantaged youth and young adults to overcome obstacles including lack of education, lack of skills, poor work history, history of substance abuse or criminal behavior, and childcare and transportation barriers. Our programs help youth address these issues and become successful by developing a network of support and resources, teaching youth marketable job skills such as professionalism, communication, and problem-solving, and providing opportunities for academic remediation and continuing education.

The Crossroads School
The Crossroads School is a public, tuition-free charter middle school operated by Living Classrooms Foundation on its East Harbor Campus through a contract with the Baltimore City Public School System. The school, which opened its doors in September 2002, draws students from five East Baltimore elementary schools, and currently serves 150 students in 6th through 8th grades. These students come from poverty stricken neighborhoods, where each of the surrounding middle schools is on the "reconstitution eligible" list for schools that are in danger of being reorganized by the Maryland State Department of Education. Of our current student population, 89% are Title I students, and are therefore eligible for free or reduced lunches. The Crossroads School prides itself on being a "school of choice" whereby students, families, and teachers choose to be a part of the Crossroads educational community. The curriculum focuses on the fundamentals of reading, writing, and math with a hands-on, interdisciplinary approach. Technology, cooperative learning, critical thinking, and real-world application of knowledge are also considered to be fundamental to the core curriculum. As we become more well-known in the community, local families are beginning to realize the positive results coming out of The Crossroads School. The Crossroads School is already showing extremely strong results for students. With continued community support, this effective school can continue to benefit the lives of our students and provide a meaningful, enriching alternative to low-performing area schools.
